Madhya Pradesh announces 35 per cent reservation for women in government jobs

In a major decision ahead of upcoming state assembly elections, Madhya Pradesh government has announced 35 per cent reservation for women in government jobs, except the state forest department.

The state govt amended the Madhya Pradesh Civils Services (Special Provision for Appointment of Women) Rules, 1997 to provide 35 per cent reservation in recruitment to women.

“Notwithstanding anything contained in any service rules, there shall be reserved 35 per cent of all posts in the service under the state (except Forest Department) in favour of women at the stage of direct recruitment and the said reservation shall be horizontal and compartment-wise,” reads the government notification.

The official notification comes days after the announcement by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan about 35 per cent reservation for women in both police and various government positions, along with a significant 50 per cent reservation for women in teaching roles.

Women would be given priorities for hiring in local governing bodies, such as aldermen and other key positions. Chouhan also announced that the state government will cover the educational expenses for girls to ensure they receive a quality education.

Recently, the Women’s Reservation Bill, after receiving approval from President Droupadi Murmu, officially became law. This legislation, known as the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhniyam,’ has earned unanimous support in the Rajya Sabha. It mandates a 33 per cent reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, marking a historic milestone as the first bill passed in the newly inaugurated Parliament building.

Madhya Pradesh is expected to undergo voting for its state assembly by the end of the year. As part of its election campaign, Shivraj Singh Chouhan will dedicate the second phase of ‘Shri Mahakal Mahalok’ corridor, built at the cost of Rs 242.35 crore, today in Ujjain. The first phase of the Shri Mahakal Mahalok corridor was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11 last year.
